Logos Word

I was in the library today, reading a Bible. It was a new translation by James Marffett or something like that. In the book of John, where it says "In the beginning was the Word, and the Eord was with God , and the Word was God..." every appearence of the word Word is replaced by Logos. I just wanted to point that out.

Glad you brought it up Smile
Logos means word in Greek I beleive. One of the ships is called the logos, Naiobi's I think.
Interestingly the altered warner brothers logo appears at the start of the film. Logo = word

Quote:

In the beginning was the word

So the matrix begins with 'Word' (logos) and it is altered.
This could be saying the matrix is a new modern slightly altered Bible.
Its kinda a loose link but oh well Smile

so does this mean that

in the context of neo being the son of god(anderson means that)

then the logos going to the machine city in revolutions is in effect bringing the word of god to the machines and giving the machines religion

what do you think?

The Logos is a basic concept for understanding the christological view on the nature of Christ (or Neo Cool. The Logos, literally 'word', is an essential thing for God to perform Creation. The act of creating the world, as described in Genesis 1, is performed through the divine Logos, by the means of it. The first verses of John's Gospel show us the nature of the Logos and then make us now that that is Christ who is the divine Logos, that in his nature the corrupted human flesh and the divine word are combined. That situation is known as the "logos-sarx" concept; Logos, as I said, meaning "word" in Greek, and Sarx meaning "flesh".

I think thats a very good analogy Cool
Maybe instead of the word of god having its literal meaning as religious texts, It means the data in neo that corrupts the smith (devil) program?

Actually, Anderson does mean "son of man", but it is rather a mixture of a Greek and a Germanic root, the proper formula for "son of man" in Greek is "ο υιος του ανθρωπου", "o uios tou anthropou". There are two words in Greek meaning "man"; "andros", from which Anderson derives, means "a male person", while "anthropos" rather means "human". Cool

A more parallel analogy is the logos--the Word--bringing Neo--the Savior--to the fields to eventually set people free from their bondage to the machines who are plugged in and stuck in the Matrix. To do that, Neo gives his life at the hand of the machines as Jesus did at the hands of his adversaries--all so people could make that choice whether or not they want out of the Matrix (or hell in case of the Jesus.) Before that sacrifice, the choice to escape doesn't exist. There's a verse in the Bible that fits this picture:

Quote:

"that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will."

You could also take it further by realizing that Neo died for all humans whether in Zion or out and whether they want out or not--just as Jesus did. To some, those in Zion represent the saved while those in the Matrix represent the unsaved, but it all comes down to choice.

How fitting.

Almost. I'd say the new son of man brings the word to the plugged-in people feeding the machines. It's all about them, right?

could be

i was taking it from the fact that it was the logos that went to the machine city

so the "word" went to the machines

neo took the logos there

so new son of man(jesus)took the "word"(of god)to the machines

giving them a religion so to speak...and therefor changing the relationship between man and machine forever

in the bible...gods word is infalable...it goes so far as to say that even he cannot change his own word once it is written...ie neo(jesus) is creating the word as he goes on his journey... in the bible jesus(god+man) comes to earth and decends back into heaven(the source)..completing his mission..thus allowing the word to become truth...full circle

Machine Religion? Trinity

ONE-der-man--huh? Screwy I think you're off base, here. We're talking about the logos ship and how it relates to it's meaning--word--in context of what happened in the movie.

I don't think Neo gave the machines a religion, so to speak. In giving his life, he gave the people who want it a way out of the Matrix so any kind of religion would be for them. Much like people have to do today with Jesus, those in the Matrix have to decide if they believe in Neo since he made their escape possible.

How would the machines have a religion with Neo as it's base? He helped make their enslaving Matrix right again, but what would Neo save machines from? Isn't religion worshipping something or someone for some form of salvation?

. . . Just trying to hash out, here.

Another thing I think interesting is Trinity.

Many are aware that the trinity symbolizes the three-fold nature of God in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spririt. Trinity in the movie becomes emotionally attached to Neo and in the end goes where he does and gives her life, too. In this, it seems that Trinity symbolizes the third character of God--the Holy Spirit, for the Holy Spirit dwelled with Jesus through the end.

Something more to think about .

Let's not forget where the Logos takes our heroes before crashing in 01: UP.

The Logos takes Neo and Trinity to the Light. The sun shines above the scorched sky. "Beautiful."

I know there's more connexions to this, but I have to find them again to quote them properly.

Awesome point, Annaerullo.

Hey, it's old news, but I was reading an chat interview with the Wachowski brothers on

thematrix.com...
archives and found this:

Quote:

Starr22: Is all the religious symbolism and doctrine throughout this movie intentional, or not?

WachowskiBros: Most of it is intentional.

and then. . .

Freethinker: Just out of curiosity, do you guys hold to any religious beliefs?

WachowskiBros: Non-denominational.

Pretty cool, eh? Right from the horses' mouth--they intended these biblical symbolisms. Now I'm excited because now I know THEY know the story isn't over yet. I wish they'd do more movies instead of just comic books or other media, though.

Back to wading through them; there's so much to uncover.

Oh yea. If you run across anyone trying to figure out how Cypher got in and out of the Matrix by himself in M1, refer him to this quote from the interview:

Quote:

WachowskiBros: We're pretty happy with the way the sentinels turned out. The digital artist that John Gaeta found did some amazing work. Cypher, at the beginning of this scene, is setting up an automated system to allow him to go meet with Agent Smith.

isn't the trinity in the bible god, the son of god and the word of god? i asked my grand papie when i was young how they could all be god and he related it to water...it can appear in 3 forms(water, ice, steam but all the same thing) i thought it was a good metaphor... Thumbup i'm guessin the source(god) neo(son of god) and oracle(the word of god) as in the word delivers the son back to the father

but then i don't understand morpheus(the believer) and trinity(the lover)..just my opinion...a different type of trinity?

But Neo rejects his "Mr Anderson" identity in favour of "Neo". There's only Smith who refers to him as "Mr Anderson" once he's unplugged - a constant reminder that he's just a (son of) man.

Adjusting your line to accomodate this gives.

"The son of man anew (or renewed) brings word to the machines."

You got me. I haven't a clue. I know squat about them.

ONE-der-man, the trinity of the bible is God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Another thing I've heard to help understand it, if any man can, is to think of God as not 1+1+1 which of course equals 3, but 1x1x1 which equals 1.

Beyond that, my puny little brain's too inferior to understand such grandios things.

One side thought:

What about the similarity between the english words "word" and "world"?

Is it a consequence?

Just something what I found about the etymology:

Main Entry: world
Pronunciation: 'w&r(-&)ld
Etymology: Middle English, from Old English woruld human existence, this world, age (akin to Old High German weralt age, world); akin to Old English wer man, eald old -- more at VIRILE, OLD

Main Entry: word
Pronunciation: 'w&rd
Etymology: Middle English, from Old English; akin to Old High German wort word, Latin verbum, Greek eirein to say, speak, Hittite weriya- to call, name

So, it seems the words evolved from different words, nevertheless, I like that they are somehow similar ...

I read The Apology of Socrates and Plato's Republic a few months ago, and I can tell you that

"Logos" did not originate in the Bible.

"Logos" is Ancient Greek for "Reason, human factulty of logic, logical reasoning, speech and debate which results in logical discourse, etc."

Much of the Matrix is based on the Allegory of the Cave of Plato's Republic. In Plato's Symposium, he stated his theory of human learning: the Ladder of Learning. We start out with physical things like sciene and crafts, move on to philopophy, and then there is a final step.

This final step is the difference between "Being" and "Becoming". Normal people are "Becoming"; they are transient....but when you proceed to "Being" you have gained higher knowledge. He states that "Being" is hard to describe in words; it cannot be described.

But the idea is that you start out at the bottom of the Ladder and proceed with Logos---logical reasoning---until your reach the top of the ladder, and the switch from continuing to be a "Becoming" creature, and you're "Being". "Being" can no longer be explained by Logos, although it was essential to use Logos to get there.

*********In the Matrix Trilogy, Neo uses the Logos to reach the Machine City (01), but there he transcends into a higher level of knowledge, "Being".

The word "Logos" got picked up centuries later by New Testament writers. Actually, even Plato and Aristotle debated the meaning of the word "Logos" (similar to arguements about "What is Truth?" they had "what is Logos?', but we stopped using that word).

Clearly. The Bible (or at least, the part that logos is concerned with) was written in Greek. The word logos must have existed before the writing of the Book of John for the writer to use it!

Nice. Thumbup The thing is, in relating the Allegory of the Cave, you just described the matrix-explained.com..., and every Gnostic myth from every part of the world (Moslem, Christian, Jewish, Pagan ) - called by most of them "Mysteries." These initiatory myths were called "Mysteries" because they could not be understood unless they were experienced by the initiate. To put it another way, "No one can be told what the [Mystery] is; you have to [experience] it for yourself."

Don't you think that Neo and Trinity's bedchamber looks like a cave? Smile

EDIT: I meant to add, it is thought by scholarship that Plato was an initiate in the Pagan Mysteries. So also was Pythagoras, who most likely actually brought the Mysteries of Osiris from Egypt to Greece, thus beginning an era rife with Greek Mysteries from Eleusis to Orpheas to Dionysos! All these taught the same thing. And Logos was, indeed, "the way, the truth and the life." Incidentally, the apostle Paul was an initiate, as well; he speaks of the Mystery of Christ, and much of his writings reflect perfectly the Pagan Mysteries.

Very good topic. You won't believe it but I was just wondering this today. I was trying to find the meaning behind The Logos, since that is the ship that carries Neo to the Machine City.

Thanks.

OUM---

Like the people living in the matrix we are also oblivios to the situation of our lives in this matrix we live within. We are all sentenced to mandatory death and suffering at the end of a short life.

We are uncertain to the fate that awaits us after death. We must awaken as neo awakened to the dismal situation of the matrix.

We are challenged as the people of zion are chanlenged in the movie when we seek liberation from mandatory death, which is old age and disease and unwanted death of ourselves and loved ones.

We must seek after our Immortality and Continuity as the way of OUM teaches we must seek our liberation from mandatory death and imprisonment of the Conscious Mind.

We must seek to Optimize our vonrable bodies to its Highest propensity of Being into an Immortal body that we can call our own into Continuity. We must excape the traps and illusions of this horrible reality of one eat the other, which is how we currently live on earth.

OHGOOOE: Marc G. Pierre-Louis
